Micky’s Story – New Blue Eyed Boy

I can say without a doubt that I’ve only fallen in love with one cat quicker than Micky and that was Jake. With Jake I was in love with him within the first 10 seconds. As soon as I saw Jake’s enormous body with his tiny head and big blue eyes I was a goner. I think it took me a little longer to fall in love with Micky, but not too much longer. I guess it was bound to be that way since I think Jake sent Micky to me. I went to pick Micky up on the one month anniversary of Jake’s death. I was supposed to go a few days earlier but was unable to. It was only after I rescheduled that I realized the date. I loaded Micky into the carrier and was ready to drive him the 30 or so minutes back home. He was such a good boy and laid down with his face up near the front just watching me.

After Jake passed away I just felt empty. I’d been trying to prepare myself for his death for awhile and I think I did as best I could. I wouldn’t have done ONE THING differently. I have no regrets whatsoever about his diagnosis, treatment or the way he passed. I just wish we’d had a bit longer together but I could never regret the quality of time we spend together especially during the last year of his life. Despite knowing that my life would never be the same after Jake passed away, I knew I would adopt again. I knew I wanted another Siamese cat to be a brother for Jonah. I started looking and came across an ad on Craiglist. The post read, “Handsome, mischievous Siamese, free to good home.” I wrote to get more information and learned the cat’s name was Micky. I really liked that name. It was a good start.

Photo of Micky that his dad sent me in response to my Craigslist inquiry.

Micky’s beginnings are a bit unclear. He might have been born and/or lived on the streets for the beginning of his life. The first medical records we were given have him listed as “stray cat”. The vet also told us that his facial structure and neutering would lead her to believe he was neutered a bit later in life than 6 months. (Micky might have little Mickys out there!!) Micky somehow was passed along to a second owner following his initial owner who rescued him from the streets. Micky’s second owner had him for a short while also. He was an unfortunate casualty of the economy and was forced to give Micky up when he lost his job and was only able to keep one of his cats. Micky the younger of the two was left in the care a sympathetic friend who took Micky in for a little over a year. Micky’s new owner was allergic to him though and despite taking allergy shots, he needed to find Micky a new home. Micky is such a sweet and playful young cat that he thought Micky would benefit from a new home with some playmates his own age.

We went to visit Micky and he was a certainly a charming fellow, quite mellow yet sociable and he seemed to like both John and myself. We weren’t exactly sure but decided to go home and think about it. We mentioned Micky a lot during that week and by the end we were both pretty excited at the thought of Micky joining our family. I think he beady bedroom eyes are his signature trait, that and his adorable personality!

Micky during his first days at our house. He was pretty comfortable with us right away.

Micky is a very easygoing and cuddly cat. He is a pretty mischievous guy like his ad said though. Sometimes I catch him doing something mischievous but I can’t scold him because he looks at me with those sad innocent eyes! All he wanted once he moved into our house was love, attention and other kitties to play with. At first I worried about how Fionna would react to him but after a bit of hissing and a few paw slaps they fell into an easy friendship of playing chase, batting mice around the house. Jonah however has been a slower transition. It’s still getting better every day but Jonah still likes to remind the other 2 of his superior position in the house. Micky could definitely benefit from a male role model around the house though. He’s taken up many of Fionna’s habits and you can see him watching and following Jonah hoping to learn something new. This usually lasts a minute or two until Jonah remembers he hates Micky and starts growling at him. Fionna can be pretty mean to him too when she decides she wants to by smacking him repeatedly in the head. Micky takes it all in stride though, rarely fighting back or getting angry. Every day has been better and better though and I think that in a few months everyone will be just fine with one another. ( I hope.)

Micky likes the Fling ama String toy too but his favorite is catnip and felt mice.

Micky is a very handsome boy with a very distinct look. He photographs beautifully but the light has to be just right to set off his eyes.

We took Micky to the vet for a full checkup after adopting him. We had a CBC (complete blood count) done on him so we’d have a baseline of his vitals. This is something I suggest for young healthy cats under the age of 7. That way once they reach their senior years you have a nice guideline for what is normal for you cat. Micky checked out fine and is FIV and FeLV free. His BUN was slightly elevated 3 points beyond normal but his creatinine was normal so we’ll have Micky rechecked in a month or so. We’re hoping that it was just a fluke and possibly due to him being slightly dehydrated. I was very worried when I found out because of what we just went through with Jake but I’m hoping for the best especially because Micky is so young.

Hi! I am Mickey’s first real adopted parent. I thought you mike like the ‘scoop’ of him.
Mickey was owned by a family in Riverside who rather callously left him to live on the streets when they lost their mansion and moved out.
I adopted him from the lady who lured him inside and fed him. She already had 7 animals so couldn’t keep him herself.
Mickey proved to be quite a handful of fun and mischief from day one. Unfortunately, my ‘first cat’, also a siamese was not at all happy with having him. They fought constantly!!! I will remember Micky most for his incurable sense of adventure and curiousity.
    Hope this helps some!
    Patrick
