Fionna’s Story – Bengali Princess

I had wanted 3 cats for awhile. We had 3 cats briefly but it became clear that Micah did not like that arrangement nor did the cat we selected want to have any brothers. We tried to work things out for about a month and things only escalated from bad to terrible. In the end, Levi was returned to his foster mom and adopted out that very same weekend to a new forever home. I cried bitterly over the loss of Levi but I knew it was best for the family. I was content to have my two boys from then on but that was only meant to be for one more year. It’s still a very sensitive topic for me. I felt like a failure about it for a long time. I felt like one of those people who dump pets for stupid reasons. I know that wasn’t the case but it felt horrible giving him back. He was so sweet with John and I but he was beating the heck out of Micah and I couldn’t leave the cats alone for 10 seconds without fur flying.

So what does this have to do with Fionna you ask? Fionna was my second attempt at a 3rd cat. I was trying to decide between Fionna a 2 year old Bengal and a can named Lucy who was a 7 year old Snowshoe. Lucy was everything I’d dreamed of in looks but when I went to visit her I didn’t have a “bond” with her. She was very shy and I worried that she wouldn’t be much of a playmate for Jonah. I’d adopted Jonah a month before and he was a bundle of energy. He was keeping me up at night and it was affecting my sleep. I’d play with him before bed every night but he wouldn’t fail to wake me up at least 3 or 4 times between 12 and 6 AM. He was also attempting to play with Jake who at 14 years wasn’t very appreciative of being chased by a 3 year old!

I was very curious to meet Fionna. I knew nothing about Bengals other than they were active, vocal and liked water. How bad could it be? I had Siamese cats for goodness sake. When I first met Fionna she liked me immediately. She is was a stunning creature (as you know) with big green eyes. I went home and thought about her a lot. I finally decided that she’d probably make a better playmate for Jonah because she was 2 and more likely to play with him than a very shy 7 year old.

Fionna arrived on New Year’s Eve 2008. From the minute she arrived she was a firecracker. She didn’t want anything to do with her secluded room so I had to unleash her on the boys right away. She seemed to get along pretty well with Jake right away but Jonah was terrified of her and hid for 2 days!

Jake and Fionna “meet” for the first time as we pack up the holiday decorations.

Here is Jonah hiding in a box of Christmas ornaments. He was in the box for an entire day hiding from Fionna!

Fionna was relinquished at a Petsmart store to Kitten Rescue here in Los Angeles. She had belonged to a young girl who was either going off to school or leaving her parents house. Either way she didn’t want Fionna anymore and neither did her parents. Fionna is a real handful! She’s such a bundle of energy that I taught her how to play fetch. She needs to be on a special high protein diet for her sensitive digestive system and is prone to over stressing so we also have her on prozac. She had a bit of a stressful relationship with Jake until his passing but has always been a wonderful pal to Jonah. Most recently, Fionna has been the bridge between Jonah and Micky since she enjoys the company of both of them. I hope in time all 3 of them will become comfortable with each other and more bonded.

Enjoying time with Jonah.

Fionna is very talented at playing a spirited game of fetch.
